Michal’s Story
“I am very grateful to Street Storage”
I came to the UK in 2005 and have had a number of different jobs here. I have worked in Agriculture, Construction, Cleaning, Security and many more. Things happened in my life that became a problem for me and I have been on and off the streets a few times in the past 5 years. I have been at shelters and on the street too which is very difficult, to stay safe and eat well and protect your things.
I was referred to Street Storage through C4WS as I needed somewhere to store my bags and things while I looked for work. It is a great service and has protected my things for months now and has helped many people.
We see more and more people come to Street Storage every week. I offered to stay with Rachel and Charlie when they are in the unit to keep them and the other people who come safe, as I am a trained Security Guard. I volunteered for a few months and then they asked if I would work part time for them officially. I have now been working with them for six months.
As the Unit Security Guard I stay at the unit when they have appointments and make sure the unit is safe for staff, volunteers and the community of people using the service and am there to make sure it is all easy and calm. I check people’s storage for anything dangerous and I help build shelving, organise the storage and other jobs.
I am very grateful to Street Storage. They have made me want to look for full time employment again and have given me a purpose to work towards. I enjoy being with the team and helping.
