March so far…

20th of March 2025

Well, it’s been quite the month for Street Storage! Here are just a few examples of what our day-to-day drop-ins have been like:

We had HD come to collect their belongings and share the news that they’re starting their own cleaning business.
PM, who’s now in temporary accommodation, is slowly moving items from our storage into their cozy new room.
We also had someone return to us after struggling with accommodation and unfortunately returning to rough sleeping.
And then there’s VL, who came to store with us after describing how they had been clinging to their backpack each night trying to sleep in a London train station. They expressed such relief at finally being able to store their precious belongings with us.

We also celebrated Pancake Day with a variety of toppings for the people who store with us. Lots of choices, but of course, you can never go wrong with a classic sugar and lemon!

More generally, we've found some brilliant friends at Gramos Coffee in King's Cross, who will now be donating a bag of beans to us every couple of months. They visited our space to see what we’re all about, and next time, Lilian, our Frontline Administrator, will be heading down to their shop to try some of their delicious coffee: decaf only for her though! Based on the fantastic reviews from people who store with us, we're sure she'll love it.

The same morning as Gramos’ visit, we also had a wonderful trio from Cavendish Ware, who revitalized the back of our storage unit and spent the morning shelf building. It was very cluttered, filled with spare items and a very inaccessible pyramid of people's storage boxes. Just take a look at that transformation! We’re incredibly grateful for their help, as - with a limited staff and a busy drop-in - we haven’t yet had the chance to do this ourselves.

Lastly, the United Reformed Church (URC) has chosen us as their Charity of the Year after being voted in by their employees. They'll be raising much-needed (and appreciated) donations for us throughout the year, already starting with a Pancake Day fundraiser. Thank you so much, URC!

Our Valentine's Storage Tree Blossoms

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, our Storage and Outreach Manager Caroline came up with a heartwarming idea to celebrate the season. She suggested inviting those who store with us (as well as staff, Trustees and volunteers) to write down something they love on a heart-shaped notes. Our Storage Support Worker Tamara then used her brilliant arts and crafts skills and creativity to bring this vision to life! The project has flourished and we’ve received some lovely contributions.

These heartfelt messages are now being placed around our ever-growing Street Storage Tree, creating a beautiful display of love and community for all to see.

Guess who’s back!

We’re delighted to welcome Cameron back to the Street Storage family! After completing an apprenticeship with us in 2023, he has returned as a volunteer. To celebrate his return, just as we did with Tamara, we thought we’d ask him a few questions to reintroduce him to the wider Street Storage community.

Why did you want to work for Street Storage?

I chose Street Storage for a variety of reasons: the clear support they bring to people struggling with homelessness, the comfy atmosphere within the office, and the ability to learn more about the human experience from other perspectives. I wanted to do my part towards helping my community and thought, for these reasons, that Street Storage would be a perfect cause to dedicate my free time towards.

What was a highlight of your first week?

A highlight of my first week back has definitely been being able to see and talk to the new regulars of the service again. It's amazing seeing how far the service has come since Haggerston and how, despite this growth, Street Storage hasn't changed from the welcoming, accommodating charity I remember it being.

Welcome Tamara!

Last week we welcomed Tamara to the team as our first full time Storage Support Worker. We’ve really enjoyed having her here and feel she’s fitted right into our small family. To introduce Tamara to the wider Street Storage community we thought we would ask her some questions:

Why did you want to work for Street Storage?

I first came across Street Storage whilst searching for a new job. I had been in my previous role for 2 years and was looking for somewhere I felt had similar values to me. I wanted to work somewhere that prioritised people over profit.

Once I had seen the advert for the position of Storage Support Worker I was surprised to discover Street Storage is the only charity providing free storage to people experiencing homelessness. Although I was aware there is a need for storage I guess I just assumed it was something that other charities also provided.

I’ve always believed that anyone can experience homelessness, and your current circumstances don’t define you as a person. I understand the value of providing people with somewhere safe to store their belongings, which is why I wanted to join the team. Often we associate parts of our identity with our possessions and no one deserves to lose everything they own.

What was a highlight of your first week?

A highlight from my first week has been Geordie showing me around the storage units and helping me learn where everything is. He also painted a beautiful butterfly to welcome me on my first day!
